The game didn't blow critics away when it was first released, exemplified by its lackluster 69 Metascore. However, an expansion was released shortly after, scoring a far more respectable The expansion was initially released as a standalone product but has since been merged with the main game. There aren't many RTS titles that are as universally known and acclaimed as Starcraft 2 , but Rome: Total War is certainly one of them. The game was released almost 20 years ago, yet it's still one of the most enjoyable strategy games to play today.
However, the game is credited with popularising many of the features that are now synonymous with the iconic Total War franchise. A real-time strategy game set in middle-earth always sounded like a match made in heaven, so there was a ton of hype when Sierra Entertainment announced that The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring would be releasing in Unfortunately, the game failed to impress.
The game was a critical and commercial success, so a sequel was announced shortly after. Rise of Nations piqued the interest of those who were in-the-know back in the early s, as the development team was led by Brian Reynolds, who had previously worked on Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and Civilization II.
The game didn't disappoint and received an impressive 89 Metascore , along with a User Score that currently sits at 8. The Age of Empires series may be set in a completely different time period to the StarCraft games, but it deserves a spot on this list nonetheless for being among the best RTS games ever made. Age of Empires 2 is set in the middle ages and focuses on resource management, base building, and unit deployment.
In late a definitive edition was released. It includes all of the game's expansion packs and is the best way to play the classic strategy game. As the title implies, Age of Mythology is an Age of Empires spin-off. Age of Empires 2 is considered to be superior to its mythological counterpart.
His actions had irreversible consequences that caused the Soviets to rise to power instead of being diminished and set back by the Germans during the Second World War. The success of Age of Empires 2 gave rise to many copycats, but Rise of Nations stood above the rest by actually being its own thing instead of copying Age of Empires feature by feature. The game offered a persistent campaign that enabled your conquest of the world turn by turn.
Every decision you made counted towards or against your absolute victory as you rose through the ages from prehistory to the modern age. Medieval: Total War is arguably the best game in the long-running series of war games by Creative Assembly.
The game puts you in the role of a Dungeon Keeper—an overlord, a boss, and fascist king dictator of a monster-filled dungeon. With the help of your monsters, you must expand your dungeon by digging through the earth, uncovering treasure and mining for gold, and making it a desirable place to live for your evil minions.
Having a successful dungeon also makes it an enticing target for the goodly terrestrial heroes who want nothing more than to claim a slice of your treasure and extinguish the beating heart of your dungeon. To that end, you have to construct elaborate traps and hire minions capable of falling even the mightiest knights—or better yet, turning them to your cause. One of the most epic stories ever told in the history of games, Homeworld is also the first of its kind—a space RTS which takes place in three dimensions, as opposed to a two dimensional plane.
The game tells the story about a race of humans in the far-flung future who discover a buried alien spaceship in the desert of their planet—a relic of their distant, spacefaring past. In their wisdom, they decide to get off their rock and find their way back home by following interstellar markers left by their ancestors.
As their home planet is destroyed by a race of other hostile aliens, they have little choice but to proceed on their voyage. They must elude hostiles, make contact with benevolent alien races, and uncover the secrets of their heritage on the way home.
Myth: The Fallen Lords is a little known game by Bungie yes, the same Bungie that made Halo that puts players in control of a commander of a unit not unlike the Black Company in the eponymous series of books by Glen Cook. The game features highly detailed 2D sprites within a three dimensional environment, which allows you to deform the terrain with explosives, bounce or roll grenades off hills, or even blow up your own units by accident if they stand in the way of the throw.
Much of the focus in Dawn of War, like Company of Heroes, is on the command of small groups of units instead of build orders and rock-paper-scissors style gameplay. Each unit can be lead by a sergeant or a commander who attaches himself to the unit, earning experience points and even items to bolster his strengths. In the single player campaign, the player takes charge of a set group of heroes who must drive back the alien forces and undertake missions in a persistent campaign that takes both wins and losses into account as you play through the game.
Weather also plays a huge role as well and can negatively affect units in certain conditions. If you are a huge history buff and love strategic combat, Company of Heroes 2 is a great option for you. Along with the board game and expansions, Games Workshops publishes fiction and audiobooks through the Black Library, and they have collaborated on several video games in the Warhammer universe. Warhammer 40, Dawn of War is one of those games.
Resources are generated automatically by the headquarters and by capturing key locations, and the player orders squads rather than individual units. Players must also juggle unit morale to improve their fighting power and push back an aggressive enemy AI. Dawn of War had three expansions: Winter Assault , Dark Crusade , and Soulstorm , and all of them are bundled together now in the complete edition. Dawn of War also has two sequels, one of which only came out a few years ago. That makes this the perfect series to jump into, as it has plenty of content even up through the modern generation of games.
In Total Annihilation , players are thrown into a far-future galactic conflict between the Core and Arm. The Core is a coalition of humans and AIs that mandate a new process called patterning: transferring the consciousness of humans into machines. In response, a rebel group called Arm emerges to oppose the singularity movement imposed by the Core.
The gameplay is equally as unique. In Total Annihilation , players start with a single Commander unit that is tasked with building the base, forming an army, and defeating its opponents. The Commander is incredibly powerful and can kill most enemies in one hit, as well as turn invisible for reconnaissance. The game has two campaigns that add to the replayability.
Total Annihilation also had a ton of DLC in the follow up to its release, and it is one of the first RTS games to include multi-player. Unfortunately, those servers are no longer available, but a few games have been made in the spirit of Total Annihilation to keep its legacy alive and well.
The Total War series has a long tradition of blending real-time and turn-based strategy in its games, and Shogun 2 is the ultimate rendition of that formula. In Shogun 2 , players take control of one of nine clans, each with their own unique strengths and features.
Players can also choose between three factions in the DLC. Players will do this through military conquest as well as cunning political ploys and economic superiority.
However, when conflict does happen, the game switches to a real-time strategy game as the player takes command of entire armies and sends them to bloody battle. With the complete edition, players get all three game packs and 11 DLC. That means you will have plenty of content to play and replay, which is what makes Shogun 2 so appealing. Vikings are all the rage in video games these days, so it is no surprise that one of the best RTS games in recent memories has a Viking theme to it.
The game plays like a usual RTS. You take control of a Viking clan, gather resources to expand your units and buildings, and do your best to survive the onslaught of the enemy AI. However, while Northgard is heavily rooted in the classic traditions of Warcraft III and the like, it also makes its own innovations to stand out and even rise up over its predecessors. For one, players must consider the seasons in their expansion efforts.
Winters in Northgard are harsh and unforgiving, and not properly preparing can be disaster out for your campaign. Units can take on multiple roles, switching from army units to workers to farmers on the fly, making the game flexible enough to maximize player resources, which you will need to do to survive. Players can also expand their lore to create warmer clothes, better weapons, and so on to even the odds. Northgard also has a unique resource called fame, which is accumulated by deeds you do throughout the game.
The plot is a bit underwhelming, though, however the overall package is more than enough to compensate that. Real time strategy RTS games are exactly what they sound like. In the s, strategy games were usually turn-based. However, heading into the s with improved AI, it became possible for players and the game to operate at the same time. RTS games usually revolve around building structures, upgrading troops, and maneuvering strategically to defeat an AI opponent doing the same thing.
It's been present for decades, iterating on an ambitious idea in many different ways since, creating its own niche in the way. The campaign is intense and as overwhelming as you would expect, whilst also offering plenty of options to move around, create plans to defend yourself and flank the enemy, or just sit back and enjoy how it all comes together in real-time.
The online multiplayer is known to be nerve-wracking, to say the least, but also beloved by the community, which has led to the release of two DLCs for it. Everything from the design to the charm and often silliness of the units makes it for a title that rarely misses. Still, it makes for a worthy presentation. Graphics-wise, everything has been revamped to better suit 4K resolutions, but you can perceive the slight fashion upgrade in p as well.
Starcraft was the first taste of the RTS genre for many, and for good reason. Its gritty sci-fi aesthetic, interesting characters with solid voice acting, and of course, non-stop combat and resource management in real time made it stand out for years to come.
The sequel brought much of what had worked well in its predecessor packed in a new campaign and multiplayer modes.
Creating your base in space as you fight against terrifying enemies, but also command them to live through their storylines is even more impressive in a brand new engine that still stands its ground to this day.
